How to actually use data to improve care

Thanks for tuning in (or catching up) on our keynote with Alphan Kirayoglu, VP of Data Science at Thyme Care.

We covered a lot, but here are my five takeaways:

  • Create a structured review cycle to drive improvement. Data scientists run daily, weekly, and monthly review cycles with care teams, helping them understand what the data means and how to act on it.

  • Data flow = care flow. Thyme Care has built internal tools that auto-generate tasks directly from real-time data, so clinicians know exactly what to do and when. Put differently: in most cases clinicians shouldn’t have to be in Tableau.
    ‍
  • Use a “Blitz Campaign List” to clean up missed actions. If tasks generated by the data aren’t addressed in time, they automatically show up in a Blitz Campaign List. As Alphan put it, “If everything is working perfectly, the Blitz List should be empty. But things are never perfect.” It highlights unresolved issues (e.g. missed follow-ups or incomplete care plans) so the team can fix them before they turn into bigger problems.
    ‍
  • Explain how to use dashboards. Don’t just throw dashboards at clinicians and hope for the best. Give clear, opinionated guidance on how to use them.
    ‍
  • Fail Point Analysis helps uncover why care interventions fail.
    • Thyme Care spends a lot time figuring out why patients still have poor outcomes even when the care model was followed correctly.
    • For example, if a patient gets discharged and the care team follows up as planned—but the patient still ends up back in the hospital—Fail Point Analysis helps uncover the root cause.
    • It could be clinical (e.g., the wrong medication), logistical (e.g., they couldn’t fill a prescription), or social (e.g., their power was cut off).
    • By analyzing these gaps, Thyme Care improves care processes and adjusts interventions to prevent the same issues from happening again.

This was a practical, tactical look at how to move from "data for reporting" to "data for action."
